Pack It Along
What to pack on event day
If you are traveling with a group, someone is bound to forget something. It’s a good idea to have a bag of useful odds and ends, other than your towel and clean clothing, that you can access before or after the event.
- Shoelaces: Better safe than sorry. Someone in your crew may need them.
- Band-aids: Cover those nicks and cuts.
- Antibiotic creme: Prevent any infections in the abrasions that you are bound to pick up.
- Baby powder or cornstarch: Relieve chafing and dry out pruney feet.
- Aloe vera gel: Soothe and heal sunburns and minor abrasions.
- Lip Balm: Use before and after.
- Bananas or Yogurt: Replace lost potassium to avoid muscle cramps.
- Nut bars: You’re going to burn about 2,000 calories in your event...you’re going to be hungry.
- Gatorade or Powerade: Replace lost fluids and top off your electrolytes.
- Q-tips: You’re going to have mud in your ears.
- Wet wipes: Your face will be dirty, and the showers are too cold to really get clean.
- Aleve (Naproxen): I like to take a couple of tablets on the morning of an event just to head off any inflammation.
